Hello Friends,
I am writing this to discuss few of the questions which I have in my mind-
--> Is production support is good choice for your career?
--> Is production support has a growth chances as development in their respective fields?
--> Is production support and development are same(monetary wise)?
--> If we want to make our career in support only then this will affect our growth opportunities?
--> Is this possible to move from support to development?
Please reply as soon as possible.
Thanks in Advance

Why not ? To each his own. I'm sure there is always an application out there that needs Production support.

If the company allows you to jump ship to a development project, then yes.

--> Is production support and development are same(monetary wise)?

This depends. When you are in the same company, it would not matter what project you are on. You get paid the same. Even otherwise the intricacies of production support are somewhat undervalued at times. A system engineer maintaining a custom linux kernel might have to think a lot more than an application development engineer writing a BINGO program. Its hard to say without knowing the nature of the role.

--> If we want to make our career in support only then this will affect our growth opportunities?

The more exposure you have, the better are your growth opportunities. Exposure comes in many ways.

If you wish to land in development project in future, I would advise to keep as close to real code as possible (i.e. application support in this case). However, in long run, it is also important to understand how production works.

I have found that working in Production Support is good training and makes a person desirable to the development teams later on.

Prod Support has processes and a discipline of its own. These are complementary, with Development. So yes, you can make a career out of being in Prod Support.

In my experience, Prod Support staff is paid a bit less, in general, than Development staff, but this is not always the case. It is possible to move from Prod Support to Development, but you might have to take a pay cut since you likely won't have the Dev experience and seniority that you might have as a Support person.

Rather than reopening every post that mentions prod support you might want to consider posting in the Blog Around The Campfire forum.
