I haven't touched the script file since it was created by the wizard, any ideas why the selection would fail this way?

I'm sure it would...but the problem is, you haven't made it easy for anyone to help you. Your original post is basically "Here's 100+ lines of code that don't work. Why?"

Most folk who come here have a limited amount of time they are willing to spend. The easier it is to help you, the more likely they will take the time. The harder it is to help you, the less likely.

I would suggest you read some of our FAQ on HowToAskQuestionsOnJavaRanch. There are several tips in there that may help you get a better response.
