I joined new company recently 2.5 months back. Last 2 months i was leading 9 resource team and currently one new resource having 2 yrs more experience has been added to my team. Problem is my manager wants him to lead team now. I am feeling bit frustrated here as project started from scratch and i have put so many efforts to build this project. Now i feel like i am getting de-graded and frustrated. I am looping him in every mail and i think i am much more efficient than him. Even whenever there is any escallation, my manager asks me to personally talk to client as client listens to me and really appreciates my technical skills and capabilities.

I asked manager to clarify my role & responsibilities but from morning my manager is not replying to me. What should I do? How this situation can be tackled and what position should i ask my manager now. I mean have you guys faced situation like this. What you did? If they ask me now to work as a normal developer now, this will be a biggest frustration for me and people i lead so far will laugh at me

Vijay,

You probably need to have a face to face meeting with your manager. Explain how you feel.. ie:

"I feel as though I was in a lead role and it seems like that is being pulled away. Is there a reason for this? Was there something I was not doing well enough?"

Second, in whatever role you are placed, do the best you can. If this person is put into a lead position on the project - ie: you end up reporting to him, be the "best" resource for him on the project.

Leadership is often found in a serving role. Your attitude during this will speak very loudly to management and to those who work with you.

Hi Moran,

I did same thing. As per my manager they made me lead at that time as they didn't have senior resource and appreciated my ways to work.

He didn't have issues with my work style but somewhere he thinks that I am too much organized and which is not good for their company culture and need to adapt to current one.

He thinks like this because when I started one old resource made noise and was reluctant to co-operate with me. Now they have got senior resource and want him to lead team. But question here is I built this project and I should get some role that will make justice with my skills. I respect experience of senior resource and don't have issues with him leading team. I am supporting him on it from the day he joined. But my manager is clueless about my next role and want me to work as a normal developer with which I feel suffocated and de-graded.

I think I suffered due to this resource making noise in team or something else like more senior resource came in team. He is telling me that he will take action against him, don't know when. Well I have decided to become normal developer role and have very less work. I mean sometimes I feel we IT industry really lack of skilled managers because of which people have to suffer.

Its 6+. I have already leaded 3 applications in past and even my last employer wanted me to lead there team for new project.

Yes, it hurts when something that you have built up from scratch as your own child is handed over to someone because he/she has more overall experience. That is why I always believe that your role should be based on your skills and NOT totally on your IT experience. I have had such incidents too. I have a work experience of 5+ years and there have been many , not 1, but many situations where I have seen people being handed over a role because of their sheer experience and not ability. I have had team leads who I had to report to who simply had no clue what their responsibilities in their current role is. There have been many times when I have had to sit with my leads and teach them many things that they should supposedly already know. It's what I term as our IT industry being immature. Putting the right people in the right job is important. Even more important is to allow them to continue in that direction. That is beneficial not only for the person but the project too.

My personal advice to you is this - Try and sort out things with your immediate manager. And be firm about what you think is right and should be done. If he agrees, well and good. If not, part ways and switch to another firm where you can get your profile the way you want it to be. You have to learn to dig your heels and be firm and clear with people in your work environment. Yes, it is a cruel world at times. But we have to live in it. Don't we?

Hi
I would say that you go with the flow and accept this new guy and finish this project. In the next project sort things clearly with your manager and know what your role and clarify.

Obviously management is doing what they are doing for some reason, being a troublemaker is not going to solve anything. Maybe they feel the new guy is bringing something vital to the project (They can be totally wrong too). So just be flexible and finish this project and then deal with it.

I have tried to sort it out but it has no use for me. Thinking your second suggestion. It may spoil my career but I will get some peace. I am a result oriented guy.

Hi Laxmi, I am currently doing same and working as a normal developer but can see so many things need to be changed and happening wrong in project now which I could have quickly addressed. I am just a silent member now and hardly have 4 hours work to do which is not at all challenging. I am not doing any trouble for team and help them whenever asked for. But the thing is somewhere frustration is still there and I am not able to stop it as suddenly getting demoted is like insult in spite of doing things far better going beyond limits. Even my manager agrees but still the reasons he is putting in front of me are not acceptable. I think he have failed in his role of management and I am suffering due to it.

Then you have your choice made. Put out your profile on the net and search for a role that suits you. It is OK to be result oriented. But tell me honestly, what harm is it going to do to your career if you leave this firm now and join another one? Nothing can spoil your career man. Believe in yourself. You have got to buck up. Start taking interviews and get a role which you like. That's it.

So. You are frustrated that your managers put the other guy in charge of the team because you think you can do a better job. You say you can see problems that you know how to fix. And you say you don't have much work now. So why don't you fix those problems, or explain to the other guy and/or your managers how to fix those problems? What have you got to lose? You're probably going to have to look for another job anyway, but you might as well do this one well while you're still there - that's what they pay you for, after all, and at least the time will pass faster if you're busy!

It sounds like you have been poorly treated by your manager here, but right now it also sounds like you are sulking on the sidelines. Even if you think there is no future in this company for you, you should still make sure you do a good job and demonstrate your skills wherever possible until you leave, because (a) you may need a reference from these people when you find a new job, (b) it's always better to be (and be seen as) a constructive and helpful team member, and (c) you never know when or where you might encounter some of your current colleagues in future. Don't burn any bridges now if you don't have to.

My advice would be: do your job properly now and make the best contribution you can to your current team, so that when you find a better job with better opportunities, everybody will remember you as that smart guy who helped make the project a success even after somebody else had been put in charge instead of you.

nobody cares here Chris. Nobody respects experience and skills here. Yesterday my same manager came to me and was asking me to do some work like putting mails to all other teams and track there connectivity issues and help them, take follow-up, and prepare an status excel sheet. Though I said no to this but is this what I deserve? Is this what I demoted for? They are increasing my frustration level. The options you are telling may be applicable in some ethical or professional environments not here I think.

So you definitely need to find a better place to work ASAP. But right now, this company is paying you to work, so it doesn't matter what you think you deserve, because they have a right to expect you to work. They are not increasing your "frustration level": you are, by the way you respond to these requests. If they give you crap work to do, you basically have three choices:

(1) Do the work and at least maintain the outward appearance of being cooperative (if you want to remind your boss that this is a waste of your skills, make sure you do it in a friendly manner), which will hopefully help you get positive references when you leave.
(2) Do the work but complain and sulk, which means your boss's most recent impressions of you will be very negative, which may affect your references.
(3) Tell your boss to go screw himself and get yourself fired, which will be very satisfying for you temporarily, but will not help your references and will force you to find a new job quickly instead of in your own time.

It's clear that you can't win this fight in your present company, but be smart: there's no sense in cutting off your own nose to spite your face. Smile and act positive, and find a better job as quickly as possible.

NO NO Vijay, I did not increase your self respect. Remember what The Mahatma said- No one can take self respect from a person unless he himself is willing to give it away. Never ever let someone tell you that you are not capable or less capable than someone at doing something. YOU AND ONLY YOU decide how you shall write your destiny with your hard work and determination. No one else. Period.


Listen to this - I left my last company without a job in hand. I had the same managerial woes. The manager of my team had changed. He was asking me to do things which I have not been brought up to do. So I asked the management to get lost. I quit without a job in hand. I was not even allowed to serve any notice period to look out for a job. Neither was I paid the 3 months salary in lieu of the notice period. I still do not have a job. Many people believed it was a foolish decision on my part. But only someone who has actually born the brunt of such situations actually knows what sort of a torture it is when you are differentiated against. I left my job in November last year. After me, 3 more experienced resources also left, all due to similar reasons of nasty management politics and favoritism. Now all the people in the team are freshers. And since it is a product, a fresher can not simply start performing tasks fluently from the word go. The delivery manager from the US- from Providence actually flew to our lab in Pune , to check what happened that so many experienced people left in such a short time. When he came to know about the whole mess , he actually screwed the manager here badly and warned the management guys to pull up their socks or else he would personally ensure that action will be taken against them. So, yes, I have been through what you are going through. My advice is still the same:

Take an offer in a role that you would like for yourself in some new firm, put in your papers, and fly away. BELIEVE in yourself. Remember, the belief comes first , then the action and finally the fruit. Cheer up mate. Things will work out.

Off-Course I will do that with something in hand as IT companies in india are not yet professional to understand these situations and want to get as much advantage as they can from resources who are suffering like this .
