Welcome to the Ranch.

the save file is not save, being deleted.

Is there an empty file or is it not there at all?

Have you checked to see if the file save code is being executed and/or what getTemplate().serialize() is actually returning? Try adding some print statements to show what is happening and what values you are saving to the file.

Ok, but that doesn't answer my question and I can't run the code without the digitalpersona onetouch sdk and a fingerprint scanner (which by chance I do happen to have but not on the system I'm using today)

Ah, I see. So the "file" is not the same as the "file template"? Could you point out in your code which lines are working with the file and which lines are working with the file template? There aren't any comments in the code which explain that difference.

This probably has nothing to do with the problem but I've just noticed your onLoad() code may not work ie
The available() method just returns how many bytes are available to be read and not necessarily how many bytes are in the file.
