Using auto-update, can't stop it from happening... ... seriously, I had an update fail once before -- the machine eventually figures it out, and backs out the update.

Indeed that's a bad update, Microsoft has withdrawn it:

Mine either. It always boots up into Windows. That bug has been around forever.
