Just spotted that Udacity will be offering a new course CS046 Introduction to Programming to teach "basic skills and concepts of computer programming in an object-oriented approach using Java". The course page says "No prior programming experience and knowledge is assumed or needed", so this is really for total beginners. The teaching staff include Cay Horstmann, who's written several excellent books on Java (and other languages), and the course is free, so if you're only just beginning Java, this might be a useful tool for your learning.
