The "cows" feature is a pretty new. It is so new that very people have any cows.... Which of course, makes the leaderboard pretty boring at this point. Right now, it is mostly moderators, and even the leaders have very little cows. Kinda looks like self-patting-of-the-backs at the moment...

I moved your post to the "Ranch Office" forum. Meaningless Drivel is usually going to get you a joke or tongue-in-cheek answer. We take things a little more seriously here.

How to become a moderator?

There is no defined process or set of steps. There is no guarantee anyone will ever become a moderator. The process is basically when the current moderators feel like it, we look around for folks who have been helpful, friendly, obey the rules, and are active around the site.

Someone may do all the above for ten years and never be asked. Someone else may have joined six months ago and get asked.

So really, the best thing to do is be a good member of our community, be patient, and hope. Or really, hope you DON'T get asked, because it is often more of a pain in the rear than not.

I was still answering your question about "how to become a moderator".

Sometimes it is a pain being a moderator, yes, although that part of my response was a little bit of a joke.

JavaRanch has no employees -- it is an all-volunteer operation. As Fred explained, people who seem nice and helpful may be invited to join the volunteer staff.

But we also joke that the best way to make sure you'll never be a moderator is to ask us if you can be a moderator -- so don't ask. Just be friendly and helpful and maybe someday you'll hear from us.
