Dear All,

The company I am working with, has hosted an application (coded by java) in the web server.. And when we try to visit the application, it throws the following error.. People using old Firefox versions are not facing any issues, whereas latest firefox versions are being hit by this error. What could be the reason and why specifically latest Firefox version and not the older ones..? Can you please clarify? Thank you so much in advance..

Are you trying to load an applet? It seems to me that the jre that your browser is using and the jre that the applet is configured for in the code are different. Can you confirm if this is the case? Also, please post short lines. Otherwise it becomes pretty difficult to read.

The error looks like a corrupted class file - for some reason, the content of the class file is wrong and it doesn't contain a valid Java class.

Is this your own code? Try to throw away all your *.class files and recompile everything.

Try and delete the Java cache from the control panel Java option. Sometimes that also causes issues with applet loading on browser.

This is a decimal number. If you convert it to hexadecimal you get 0A0A0A3C. I don't know why the producer of the error message doesn't convert it to hex for you, that would be much more helpful. Because that's what you actually need. But anyway if you check your ASCII code chart you'll see that's three line-feed characters followed by a "<" character. So my guess is that instead of a Java class, your server is sending some kind of HTML error page.

But guessing is only the starting point. Let's see what you actually get when you put that URL into the address bar of your browser: https://xxx.com/applet/CompSelector.class. Only you'll have to copy the actual URL from your Java console log, don't use the obfuscated version you posted here.

Thanks for your replies. I'll let know the exact change we are going to make to resolve this issue, once development team confirms it. But i got another question now.

The development team also uses same Firefox and JRE version, but the issue is not seen at their end, but only at my end. What could be the other dependencies causing this issue? Where exactly its going wrong?

What is the JRE that your browser is using? Bear in mind that the browser also requires a plugin / add on that is to be enabled for loading applets. Go to tools->add ons and check.

Its all latest version.. Java version 7 update 21. The dev team also uses the same, but issue is only seen in mine and few others. I got my laptop re-imaged recently.. is that could be the reason? In that case, what is the exact dependency which causes this issue.. As of now, it seems like, its not Firefox, its not Java, then what else could be?

Does the development team have the same update too? Check that. And check your update version using this link. There are known issues between various updates of the same version of Java, especially when it comes to applets. Read this

Yes. Same version is being used by them. Same Firefox and Java version. Everything is same.

I did some basic troubleshooting at my end..

-Since FF offers only 32 bit browser for windows (ignoring nightly builds), unlike both 32 and 64-bit for Mac and Linux users
So, checked the compatability of Java with the browser (32-bit on 32-bit)
- Cleared the cache memory from Java control panel
- Made sure that only one instance of java has been installed and only one instance of jre is running from java control panel and disabled one in case if two was running

Code change:

Went through lot of forums and from my understanding, i believe the following sounds logical.. "When accessing the applet, tomcat isn't relying anymore on cookie based login and makes a redirect to authentication page (log files could be checked to confirm) and the JVM gets the html of the redirect page, considers the html as a class file and checks for the magic number of every class file. There it gets the "magic number" retrieved of a html page (which has no magic number) and therefore displays an error"

In one such scenario reported (in case of weblogic server), the solution which worked was

adding the following lines

"<session-descriptor>
<cookie-http-only>false</cookie-http-only>
</session-descriptor>
"

in weblogic.xml file.

But still my one and only question needs an answer..

"WHY ME?" Lol.. Same FF, Same Java - working for them.. but not for me and few others.. So, what could be the other dependencies..

Thanks for your valuable replies. I cleared cache memory/cookies in the browser which resolved the issue. But the same troubleshooting didn't help one of the user. Not sure whats wrong in his end. But as of now, I guess this pretty much solves the issue. Will post a brief analysis after further clarifications and share it here, before marking this thread as resolved.
