Data retention purging app

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
I wish to create a purging app to delete data according to a data retention policy. I came here for some ideas on this, and if anyone has ever worked on such an app, perhaps to provide some feedback at what they didn't think of originally.

the app would run every week and purge data from a db... email notifications and a suspend feature would be built in. I was also thinking of not actually deleting the db entries when it runs yet mark them as deletable and have the app delete them later once management approves the files to delete. of course this is me just trying to go the extra mile.

our database is DB2 and coding in Java. any libraries or plug-ins which might help the process is highly appreciated.

I'm sorry i don't have a specific question, yet I was hoping someone can guide me and throw some knowledge this way...

thanks so much for your time.

You're on the right track. Namely, the first thing to do is to figure out what the program should do. Fortunately you have a data retention policy to guide you. That was what you meant, right? Not that you had to develop the policy? At any rate, start with the policy and it should guide you while listing the requirements.

It doesn't matter what kind of database you're using, or what language you're planning to code in, at this point in time. Identify the requirements first.
