Old book from 2006 and not much has changed or get a new one.

I don't need to learn design patterns just the language and it seems most book teach to program and not just the language.

Nick,
You'll need to supplement the old book to learn about the new features in Java 5 and 7. (There were a number of syntax additions in those too versions, which is why I didn't mention Java 6.) If you want a book, you could read O'Reilly's Java Developers Notebook for 1.5 and Packt's New Features in Java 7. Or read about the features online - you'll at least get the most frequently used ones this way.
