Is it possible for me to execute a build.xml in a subdirectory via a call from the current build.xml???

Yup. . . use
<ant dir="subdirectory" />
Other optional parameters:
antfile - file name, defaults to build.xml
output - file to hold the output of the Ant script
target - specific target to be run in the Ant file (otherwise will default to default target in file)
