Need for web.xml?  RSS feed

Does a web app need the web.xml file if the developer does not use Servlets and just accesses the .jsp files directly (through the URL)?

Even servlets can be (auto-)confgured using annotations without a web-xml file.

Note: annotations are available only in Servlets 3.

I'd alos highly recommend against a JSP-obly implementation of even simple web apps.
