How to start contributing to source forge java projects ? I have checked out a project from sourceforge and use git as the CVM. However, how do I actually start contributing to the code in this project ? Do I need approval from the development team ?

You would generally start by hanging out on the developer mailing list (or whatever means the dev team uses to communicate), so that people get an idea of who you are, what your interests are, and what you intend to do. You will not get commiter privileges at first, certainly not to the main branch - your submissions will be vetted until the folks in charge are convinced that you do good work in the spirit of the project. I would advise to start with an existing bug or feature request, not with some entirely new idea of yours.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
