Willingness to learn, ability to keep on trying till you get it right and pride in what you do. And these are the pre-requisites for just about everything in life.

Check out the FAQ http://www.coderanch.com/how-to/java/AndroidFaq for tips on sites you can refer to and tools you can use.

What is core Java? What does 'complete knowledge' mean? I doubt very much that anyone has 'complete knowledge about Java' but you do need to be comfortable writing Java applications.

You will need to understand how to program in Java, use the API, understand how libraries work. You will not necessarily need to learn Swing, JavaFX, or AWT but understanding the concepts (separation of UI from app code, threading issues, responsive design) will help you with the Android UI as well. If you are comfortable reading JavaDocs then then learning what parts of the Java API are available in Android is easy - so you should learn to read them.

I think getting the core java basics right is the first milestone you should target for, and later , depending upon your requirement, learn more API's(eg: network api) , also there's no such thing as complete knowedge of java as its too vast
