i am a java/android developer and been thinking if i need to pursue a certification exam just to see if i can pass, but i've met and seen successful people without taking any certifications and a lot of them are way better than the ones who passed the exam, i can say that i'm not yet successful but in a good position even without a certification. I guess this is just something debatable nowadays. Any thoughts on this?
I Have ocjp, and working towards OCE WCD. I find this certs more of a personal achievements and core knowledge builder than a paper for job hunting. Job Experience and this certificates can boost you up the career ladder and expand your confidence for a certain technology.
Certificates are valuable, as that's why they are sought after. However, getting certified is less important than learning the certification contents.
I also planned to give scjp a few years back when I heard about it, but didn't. As I learnt the contents for the certification my knowledge in java was definitely improved. Since then, I also studied other certifications like scwcd, etc for the sole purpose of improving my skills.
I'd say that importance of certification is conditional and can vary between various employers/recruiters.
