Contract project: where to live + transport means + rate

(I don't know what is the correct topic question.)

I have a hypothetical question (could be a reality, I never done any contract project before):

Suppose you live in Los Angeles, you have a java project in NewYork for 6 months.

How do you go about calculating or planning, I just throw out questions

Where you live? In a hotel/motel or rent an appartment
Means of transport? Rent a car for 6 months?
What are the options/questions should I be asking?

Based upon the above possible answer, I have to calculate the hourly billing rate.

Thanks.

If this is New York City, you don't need a car. And you can rent a room share which is less expensive than an apartment. Or rent from someone who is out of town for a few months. In other words, it depends on where your hypothetical contract is.

Thanks.

Is there any link where we can consult the average hourly billing rate for a regular java software developer?

For those who have done contract jobs out of your own state, how was the experience if possible to share?

Have you tried looking at Salary.com. Salaries in the US change a lot based on which area you live in, simply because cost of living varies a lot

@H.Paul, you can find crowdsourced quantitative data on costs of living here. Perhaps it can help you calculate your rates.
