Java, or rather the common JVMs, are not well suited for realtime applications due to the unpredictability of the GC. Check out Oracle's JRockit as well as some other specialized JVMs for that.

Note that "real time" in Indian English means "real life" - people who use this phrase usually don't mean real-time computing.
