What's the overhead of using JDBC driver encryption

We are planning to turn on encryption on the JDBC driver. What is the impact of this change? I am assuming it will increase CPU and memory consumption on both client and server. DOes anyone have a benchmark that compares performance with or without encruption?

How does this affect BLOBS. DO BLOBS get encrypted over the wire too?

I can't talk to performance. I would expect it to encrypt BLOBs too though. After all, if you were storing a Word document confidential document in a BLOB, you'd want it to be encrypted upon send. (Presuming you don't trust the channel).
