My android widget for OIS(online information system for our college) project is going on.While i work on my ideas regarding this i wanna make it unique by adding some interesting and new features which was never used in our college OIS. Following are my ideas.By now i have developed the front end part of the widget.Server side scripting part using php is gonna start soon.

By this android widget for OIS the students and faculties will be able to see their attendance, timetable and notice. The timetable will be downloaded to local database and can be browsed even if the phone doesn't get connected to wi-fi inside or outside campus. Only those information will be displayed which are relevant to the particular student/faculty.The widget can further be enhanced to avail features like setting up an alarm for certain important activities like assignment submission final date, internal exam date, class timings etc.

Along with these ideas i need some more unique ideas to make this android widget more valuable for our college.Any ideas regarding student information system (or) faculty information system (or) any added features ideas are welcome.

Not to rain on your parade, but just about all of this can be implemented by setting up a calendar within the Android OS. So if your app downloads the data and sets up the calendar, you're basically done - no need for any Android widget or client-side code. Actually, if the student's data is made available by the server-side system via ICS, there's no need for an Android app at all - the built-in calendar app can just import the ICS feed, and be done with it.

I appreciate that student projects don't need to be entirely practical, but in this case it would -IMO- be so impractical as to be pointless. Can you choose some other project?

How about
1) Which are the professors for the subjects I am taking? How do I contact these professors?
2) Time table + lecture room info
3) What other students are taking the same class as I am
4) What students are taking what classes?
(#3 and #4 are really cool when you want to find out hot girls and plot how to meet them)
5) Study groups
6) College news
(This has lots and lots of potential. Think of it on the lines of a news paper where students can submit articles, news snippets, editorials etc. And go for a server push with preferences. e.g. I want to be notified when there is any type of new news/information tagged 'canteen' or 'swimming')

@Ulf Dittmer : Thanks for your response. No i can't choose another project and i don't even want to.As a beginner to android programming i found this project kinda cool and i also do believe this project can be enhanced by generating and implementing unique ideas just like @Maneesh Godbole did share his ideas.Could you share your ideas keeping in mind that i can't choose any other project right now.

@Maneesh Godbole : Thanks a lot for these wonderful ideas.I completely agree on point #3 and #4.You're a dude. And the same idea also can be implemented for faculties, like enter the name of a faculty and know what subjects in which classroom and when he's taking which class.
Time table + lecture room feature is already in my list of ideas.
Coming to the news part two buttons can be made available,1.News for your Batch students 2.News for entire Btech students.A noteworthy point is we don't have any tags for college news in our college OIS. So i don't think it will be possible to categorize news according to the tags.Is there any alternative to this?
Now i could not get how study group feature can be implemented.I mean what features it can provide to students, can you please explain a bit more on it?
And your ideas are very interesting. It would be very helpful indeed if you can provide some more ideas too.

Dont take this the wrong way but you are coming off as someone who asks everyone else and then is happy with the "unique ideas"
You need to ShowSomeEffort. You are the one in college. You tell us what a "study group" means to you and what all functionality you would like it to have. The first thing is figuring out what, then then worry about how

@Maneesh Godbole : Yes you're right.Regarding study group idea what my proposal is,if a student/faculty wants to start a project/research/study about a particular topic then he/she can search who're the people related to that particular topic of interest. Then he/she can send a mail to all of them through intra mail system mentioning about his/her wants. The Mail will be delivered to each and everyone related to that subject of interest(for eg. student who are having java programming as a compulsory subject). After going through the mail interested students can mail back to him/her And a study group is formed.

Does this impress you?

I wouldn't agree with the meaning of "study group", but if that is what it means in your context, then go for it.
