I am new to Eclipse 3, I want to set a breakpoint. Docs says "double click on the left of pane/window" and a blue dot will appear.

When I double click a window "add a bookmark" appears.

Whats wrong?

You are not in a Java editor. Eclipse doesn't identify the document, where you want to set the breakpoint, as a Java source file.
You must first create Java project and then Java class. Its easy, but difficult to explain.
There is an online help via menu: help : help contents.
There is a "java development user guide" which should get you started quickly to manage the basics.
