Hello Achutan,

Congrats on your passing the exam. Wow 80%
I too am planning to take OCPJP 6 (1Z0-851) exam in a 2 - 3 months. I request a bit of advice from you.

I have close to 3 years of commercial programming experience in Java. Mostly Java 5 and 6. But I have started realising my knowledge far from certification standards.

Qn # 1) Does the exam have any requisites in terms of work experience or attending an authorised course etc. ?

Qn # 2) What are the books / online resources you recommend ? I am mainly following "Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 - Study Guide" written by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates. Is that enough ? Does it cover all the OCPJP syllabus as the book was written for SCJP in 2008.

Qn # 3) What was your preparation strategy ?

Qn # 4) Any other tips ?

Thanks,
Lakshman

There are no prerequisites. There are 15 year olds getting certified.

Kathy sierra is more than enough.Actually Serialization topic is extra for the exam.

Qn # 3) What was your preparation strategy ?

I lost touch with java and had to start from scratch , i used Murach's core java book. Then i started reading the guide.Underline as you go along . The only problem i have with the book is some of the questions at the end of the chapter are way too hard as compared to the real exam. Without practicing questions you wont feel confident. Use the free resources here on javaranch , even the outdated 1.4 questions(which are still in the syllabus).I ordered enthuware's mock test engine. I scored anywhere between 45% and 68% on the mock tests. Enthuware is easier as compared to the master exam CD.But it is good .

Qn # 4) Any other tips ?
I have an android phone , there are free SCJP apps in the app store. I used to play around with the questions and it feels good when you get them correct.
