Hello,
I found this code in the book chapter 1, p. 31:
%javac -classpath /your path/tomcat/common/lib/
servlet-api.jar -d classes src/Ch1Servlet.java

Is this a linux tomcat path? In Windows I have c:/tomcat/lib/servlet-api

It's just an example. You can install Tomcat anywhere you like, as long as you replace that path with the correct one for your machine.

Danke Ulf, hilft mir. I am sure you can read books about that, but: servlet.api.jar is the file with a package of classes and respective methods that is responsible in the tomcat app to serve servlets to the client? So there should be one method like serveResponse()?

That file contains just the Servlet API classes and interfaces, and some convenience and utility classes (like HttpServlet). All the hard work happens in the servlet container's classes - all those tomcat*.jar and catalina*.jar files in Tomcat's lib directory.
