We're sorry, but your post appears to contain abbreviations

I tried to respond to a thread dealing with the implementation of an equation ( https://coderanch.com/t/624366/java/java/Writing-formula-Java ) and quoting some Pawel Pawlowicz 's earlier response but kept getting -

We're sorry, but your post appears to contain abbreviations that we don't like people to use at the Ranch. Because JavaRanch is an international forum, many of our members are not native English speakers. For that reason, it's important that we all try to write clear, standard English, and avoid abbreviations and SMS shortcuts. See here for more of an explanation. Thanks for understanding.

If the abbreviation occurs within code, you can use code tags to post it successfully.

The specific error message is: "r" is a silly English abbreviation; use "are" instead.

The offending 'r' was part of the quoted post and not an abbreviation but part of an equation! Surely this is a bit silly !

Well, I wouldn't agree that it is silly -- as it was really annoying with lots of leet speakers roaming the ranch.... On the other hand, it is definitely a bit aggressive -- and quite frankly, there does seem to be many false positives.

If it is part of code, the filters are not applied in code tags. Be sure to surround code with code tags, even when quoting.

When I quote part of a post I prefer not to have to modify the text I am quoting. What surprises me is that Pawel Pawlowicz was able to post the equation in the first place without getting the same response !

Hmmm.... That is surprising. Perhaps there is a loophole that we don't know about?

Pawel's post was in [tt] tags. I believe that's the loophole. On the other hand, I am able to quote it and post a reply without errors. The quoted text retained the [tt] tags.

Yes, the [tt] tag content is considered code if I'm not mistaken.

No, abbreviations are not allowed in tt tags. I've just tested it as a regular user in our test environment. It would be a nice enhancement, though.

Update: it seems there is a regular expression at work. We do allow a single 'r', but we don't allow 'u' followed by an 'r' in a post.
