I am writing an application that allows me to write notes and save them so the next time I open the program I will have a list of those notes that I can then add to, edit or delete. Do I need a database for this?

There's already a bazzilion applications out there already to do this very thing for you. So from that point of view, do you really need to write this app at all?

If you're just doing it for learning then the answer is no, you don't need a database for this. Writing to text files would also be suitable. However you could use a database if you wanted to.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
