(not a code question)Hi I would like to become a better programmer but I would also like to understand how these programs run etc

can anybody explain to me in simple terms what system call and parent/child processes are,

A system call is when you make a call to an operating system level process. This happens in C.

Parent/child processes are hard to describe without using those words. Suppose you have a UNIX script. It's a process. And it starts a process in the background. That's now the child process or the original UNIX script.
