Hello, this is my first post in this forum. Im glad to be here

A few questions i would like to ask. Im planning for a career change to be a java developer. Im not a programmer now, but i do have some mild experience in programming and most of all, interest in it.

As a starting point, i felt it would be good to be equipped with java certs to show my employee (whoever it is) that im serious abt java. However, i also see in other forums, people dont regard the certs in the same way as i do. A manager would rather employ an experienced programmer rather than someone with a paper qualification. I agree to that strongly, but isnt the paper qualification a good starting point?

Next, im confused abt the associate certs. there are 2 of them (Oracle Certified Associate Java SE 5/SE 6, Oracle Certified Associate Java SE 7 Programmer ). Which one should i take? The path that im planning for is the programmer cert.

Some guidance from the experienced members here would be very useful. thanks so much. Have a good day.

The associate certification is sort of a beginner certification while the programmer certification is a bit more in content and knowledge. I would recommend to go for the programmer certification as it matches with what you want to become. But just like you mentioned, a certification alone would not be enough.
