I am a networking student and this semester I'm taking Java 1 and I am so lost. Can anyone tell me where to start or where to begin. I've been asked by the teacher to download netBeans. Can anyone help me?

Hi Holley, welcome to CodeRanch.

You can find NetBeans here: https://netbeans.org/downloads/ . The first of the downloads should be fine. You can not install NetBeans without first installing a Java Development Kit (JDK) first though. Get one here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7-downloads-1880260.html

After installing the JDK and NetBeans, you can go to File -> New Project -> Java -> Java Application. After creating the application, you can expand the nodes on the left of the window, and find the main class. You can run it with the big green "play" button at the top.

To develop a Java application, check out the Oracle tutorials: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/

Do they insist you use NetBeans? Most of us believe you are better off using a decent text editor, in which case you will want to create a “Java” directory somewhere.
Look at our FAQ about your first ever program.

Thank you for your help! I'm taking it online so I am really learning it on my own as the instructor just gives us work.
She does require netbeans which is confusing to me! It's all confusing honestly! The good news is I am eager to learn therefore, I will put forth the effort. Where I'm really confused is where the symbols come from, like {.

What do you mean? Do you have a difficult time finding them on your keyboard?

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
