What do start up companies typically ask web developers to do?

I wish I could find the link but I read that web development is either in:
Start-up companies
B2C
B2B
Gaming
Finance

Does that sound like an accurate assessment?

The one I wanted to ask about first is start up companies. Are these roles normally more design orientated? What is to stop these companies from using something like wordpress?

I guess they would have:
- A back end database if they needed to store customer/product information.
- Maybe a "chat to help"
- Store locator

WordPress is not a backend for a business web site. This question can't be answered in general, the gamut is just too wide.

Generally startups require a full-stack developer which means you know more than just wordpress/any other cms.
Also as Ulf mentioned, there are huge possibilities but even as a designer, you could be using specialized techniques like visualization and continuously evolving your product design/standards.

If I decided to go to the "start-up" route and learn the full stack, how good are my design skills expected to be?

You mean visual design? Most companies keep designers and developers separated, since design competence is not something most developers have in abundance.

Software design you would of course have to do.
