Hi, I don't mean to be hard on you or rude but you are not going to write cleaner tool that modifies registry and performs low-level operations on file system if you can't even google up how to modify Windows registry in Java. Sorry.
You can read something about it here.

* I didn't read this. It is just a page from google query that looked reasonable at first glance.

Why do you want to write such application in a first place?
For your own use? They are some nice free applications (example CCleaner).

Do you want to sell it?
I'm afraind nobody would buy it because:
1. They are some nice free applications (example CCleaner).
2. I don't think I would trust the application that doesn't have positive reviews (and new application will not have any reviews) and could potencially destroy my system.
3. If you charged people for your application you would be responsible for any damage it would cause on their system. Are you prepared to handle that?

Like Pawel, I'm a bit puzzled why you would want to do this in Java.

The whole point of the language is that it's platform-independent, so stuff like registry manipulation (which is strictly a Windows beast) is likely to be more difficult (and probably less reliable) than in a language like C/C++.

I haven't tried it, but consider the JRegistryKey library so you don't have to handle low level details.

Just for future reference, if someone asks you "why do you want to do this?" saying "I've been given the task" is not a good answer. You need to understand why it's important in the context of the project, and why something so specific should be required. After all, you are the tech professional, so details of the implementation should be left to you.
