Just looking for a solution.

This is what I ended up with and it is not what I want.
How do I convert this to an applet that would run independently on a desk top out of all these shells?

Welcome to JavaRanch.

What do you mean by "run independently on a desktop" - without a browser? if so, applets are not for you; you want a JavaWebStart app. If you meant something else, please elaborate.
