Hi All,

I am relatively new to Java but need to do a challenging task.

Using the concept of web service (SOAP), I need to have a web service running. The client page will pass an ID to the web service and in return the service will return some values retrieved from the database based on the ID passed, as output. The output so fetched has to be in XML format.

Any early help in this context will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!

Unless you have a particular requirement to use SOAP, a RESTful style web service will be easier to implement.

The Web Services FAQ here at the ranch points to many articles that will help you make the SOAP / REST decision.

Many thanks...

Only if you could guide me with some code on how I should go with it. Since I am totally new to the concept, I am just left wondering what to do!!!

Thanks once again...

There are many introductory tutorials out there; search for "jax-rs/jersey introduction/tutorial" or some such combination, and you will find plenty.

Subject areas you need to get comfortable in:

1. Servlets - HTTP requests and responses, servlet life cycle - be able to write and run a simple servlet on your local copy of the Tomcat server

2. XML - creating, parsing and manipulating with the standard library.
