What does executeUpdate() return? Are any exceptions thrown?

Are you going to tell us what kind of exception is being thrown? Post the entire stack trace.

What makes you think that the update statement doesn't work? What happens if you run this code? What does executeUpdate return?

Do a "select count(*) from category where category_name = ?" before the update, so that you know the selection works.
