Welcome! I don't have a question, but I do want to say thank you. When I first made the decision to change my career from hardware support to Java developer, this is the first book I turned to. I locked myself in a room with a computer and Java for Dummies and spent many long hours entering and modifying the code and doing the exercises. I eventually moved on to more difficult material and passed the SCJP and then moved to JSP and Servlet development. That was about six years ago and the career change has worked out very well and I'm quite happy with the results. And you got me started.

You have my sincerest thanks!

J. Kevin -- Thank you for the kind words. Also, about your signature... In an interview that I did with Joseph Weizenbaum in 1987, he said the same thing. People weren't yet aware of the Internet so they used their computers for games and minor in-home calculations.

The quote is also taken out of context. "Uncle Ken" (as we DECcies referred to him in-house) was of course, talking about the "mini-computers" of the day: where "mini" meant about the size of two refrigerators, not including the washing-machine-sized hard drives, refrigerator-sized tape drives, and piano-sized printer.

Yeah, not exactly a home-friendly setup.

But fun to play text-based Adventure and Empire on!

(Picture is a setup for the VAX 11/780, which was in development at the time of the quote, and for which I wrote some of the micro-code.)
