I'd guess that the string value that starts in line 6 ends at the first double quote in line 7, so that the backslash in the next character is invalid JSON.

But I'm escaping it. Why should that not take any effect?

The first double quote on line 7 is not escaped; it ends the value. Everything that comes after that is a syntax error.

Here is what I have now:

It fails with the following message:

The JSON input is NOT valid in JavaScript, unterminated string literal (At line #6), (At position #75)

As soon as I had the Strings for the sourcecode in a single line, it worked!

Of course. You can't just arbitrarily split strings across lines.

You can in plain old JavaScript (POJS?) if you end the line in a backslash.

Accessing o.longString gives you

1234abcd5678

However I suspect this is a case where JSON is stricter.

You are correct. Many people think that JSON and JavaScript hash literals are interchangeable, but JSON is much stricter.
