Hi,

I am one of those guys who are seriously thinking of slowly moving away from Java in which I have worked for almost a decade.
Will Java 8 have enough good points to bring back guys like to Java again ?

Regards,
Anujit

Each language has a place of its own and I think it depends on why people moved away from Java. What was your reason for thinking to move away from Java?

What are you moving to? The real competitor to Java┬« is C#, and writing C# code suggests you have a job writing Windows┬«‑specific applications.

I think as a practical matter, if you're working at a company with a large amount of existing Java software it will be easier to convince them to move to Java 8 than to convince them to move to Groovy, Scala, Clojure, or JRuby. Asking them to switch to C#, C++, Python, Perl, PHP, Haskell, Erlang, or Objective C will probably just get strange looks and laughter.

I'm working with Java because I was fortunate enough to find a job with excellent benefits and a team of brilliant people that challenge me. I'm not willing to give that up yet. But Java 8 doesn't add enough to the language to rekindle my liking of it, all of my hobby development these days is in Clojure and I am desperately hoping to use that instead of Java at my next job.

Tell them the alternatives are FORTH (postfix grammar) or LISP (prefix syntax) and they really will run a mile!
