What would you recommend as a companion book, or "programmer's bible" for a new Java programmer (30+ years experience, but new to Java)?

I'd recommend Herb Schildt's "Java: the Complete Reference." It covers most parts of core Java. It doesn't cover servlets/JSPs/etc. But one book can't cover the whole Java ecosystem.

There ain't no such thing as a comporehensive book (as Bear hinted) but I like Horstmann and Cornell Core Java II. The Java8 edition is not yet available, however.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
