Hi,

I observed back button issue on java ranch.

steps to reproduce :

1.> Login to your account.
2.> click on the back button of the browser or right click on the page and click back.

Observed Behavior :

user is getting redirected back to login page.

Expected Behavior

user should not get redirected to login page if s/he is already logged in.

The user is not "redirected" anywhere - he is simply taken back to that page. If you go from page A to page B, it seems natural to me that hitting the back button would take you back to page A. What page do you think it should go to instead?

And does your browser behave differently for other websites?

What do you mean, "back" to the home page? The user wasn't on the home page, he was on the login page. This is standard browser behavior that web sites should not mess with. If they do, they likely violate http://www.coderanch.com/how-to/java/InterfaceDesignersRule1

I tried several sites and all of them, except Gmail, got me back to login page in these circumstances. Gmail got me to the inbox instead. I, personally, find the latter confusing.

1.> open www.coderanch.com.
2.> it will show login page.
3.> now login to your account (you are nowon home/index page after login).
4.> now click back button. you will get the login page again.

Perhaps certain site do present you the home(?) page when you try to go back to the login page while logged in. CodeRanch doesn't and it's not an issue at CodeRanch. We just don't do anything special with the back button.

In other words, the user was not on the home page as you said, the user was on the login page. Going anywhere else would not be going back, it would be something else that would be against the UI rule I cited earlier.

As a UX expert, I would strongly oppose changing the current intuitive behavior.
