policy about responding to old threads

Yesterday someone posted a message to thread that was more than a year old, thereby bumping it to the top. I did not realize that it was an old thread and replied to OP as well. My reply was deleted by the moderator because of the same reason. I have no problem with that but I just wanted to mention that this policy might not be as useful as it seems for the following reason -

We encourage people to ask questions on the forum instead of PM so that people besides OP may benefit from it as well. By the same logic, wouldn't a thread with a solution/answer to OP be a lot better than a thread with no responses. Of course, the response will probably not be useful for the OP but for other people, OP's question and answer would still be as useful as it would have been if the response was timely.

Just a thought.

I take it you're talking about https://coderanch.com/t/602480/ocajp/certification/Time-estimation-OCAJP-preparation. I'm not sure why your post was deleted, earlier and later recent posts are still there, after all.

Our general stance on this has changed somewhat over the years. We used to discourage posting into old topics, but now we think that's fine. Sometimes old material is still relevant, and a new question can fit in perfectly into an existing topic.
