Hi all,

I have listening about IoT (internet of things) these days.
i am just quite confused to relate this with manufacturers, i mean (e.g. i am not able to relate it with such a company who makes say, Trucks or aeroplanes.)

Any Ideas Any Thoughts?

Thanks,
Punit

What exactly confuses you about it? One example that's currently in the news (due to their acquisition by Google) is Nest: http://www.forbes.com/sites/parmyolson/2014/06/24/google-nest-smart-home-internet-of-things/.

Trucks and planes are actually outdated examples - most commercial trucks will be hooked up to their central office already, at the least to relay back their position if nothing else, and airplanes will usually phone back either to Boeing/Airbus or their airline with their status (and the engines will usually stream data to their maker at GE/Rolls Royce/Pratt&Whitney).

Actually i was thinking the same Trucks and air planes are already that much intelligent. they must already be using IoT.
then i thought "why this IoT is becoming popular now a days".

after reading the article (you shared in your last reply) and having a quick tour about NEST, i understood that we are on the way to applying this to our day to day stuffs, that is the reason it is becoming more popular now a days.

Just a silly thought ::-

What if there is any app which does the following :-

let say someone is working in his/her office, and the is heavy raining outside, suddenly a pop up to his machine or mobile comes up and say, "hey it's raining outside why don't you have a cup of coffee".

OR let say someone is working in his/her office, and again there is heavy raining, (and his/her working hours are complete and s/he is about to leave) again a pop up comes with message, "hey it's heavy raining outside why don't you stay form some more time we will update you again once the rain stops".

OR let say someone it sitting into their cubical and what is s/he himself can manage the temperature of his/her room from his mobile/system?
and so many....

is these kind of apps available?
doesn't the sound interesting?

The Internet of Things came up at Devoxx three weeks ago.
It is not useful to know whether it is raining where you are. More useful when it tells you it is raining at home, or you tell it you are leaving work in Winter and the heating turns on at home.

I am not sure that having pop-ups due to weather is directly related to the Internet of Things... But it is a neat idea, and something you can already do with IFTTT (If This Then That): https://ifttt.com/connect/weather/sms.

Now it would be neat if you had an umbrella rack that, when rain was expected that day, rotated an umbrella into place next to the door handle so it would be harder to forget it Or had something on your car which detected rain drops and rolled up the windows. Or when rain started at home, had a speaker which called the cat/dog in and unlocked a pet door for her.

Note we have had a discussion about this in the Meaningless Drivel forum here.

Refrigerators that are hooked up to the internet have been hacked into spambots.
Toilets hooked up have been hacked to spray you with water.

It might work for cats and dogs but wouldn't for children
