My team is in the beginning stages of planning for an upgrade from WAS 7.0 to WAS 8.5. The current application actually uses WebSphere Portal Server 7.0 on top of WAS, and we're considering a re-design of the application without the WPS layer.

Would this book be helpful in our re-design and re-coding efforts?

In short, yes, it would. It would help you move to a more mobile-centric architecture and approach.
