Hey all!
I am soon to be a college junior. I have very limited programming knowledge but I am decent with numbers. My resolution is to be proficient in Java within the next 12 months.

Any suggestions as to how I should go about doing this, I have the herbert schildt java textbook for JDK 7 and I am slowly getting passionate about it so please advice me.

Cheers!

Three suggestions
1) Practice
2) Practice
3) Practice

Get a book which has code samples. Understand the code. Write it yourself. Then change something in the code and try to understand what happens.
If you get stuck on anything, drop by at the Ranch, show us what you tried, tell us where you are stuck and we will help point you in the right direction

Nasty spelling error there; it is spelt y‑e‑a‑r‑s

You can read more about it here.

My first suggestion is to consider this required reading.

the easiest and the most compelling way is to get an idea. be a little creative and develop an idea. Challenge yourself and start working on a project of your own. And whenever you need help, ask google.. Google has more than enough answers to almost anything. Keep raising your challenges and eventually you'll make yourself better than the smartest person in your class. True Story ;)
