JAVA_HOME versus installed jdk's in Eclipse

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Hi whats the difference here? I need to install java 7 for one of my new systems that I work on. The old one though needs to remain as java6 for now. If I change the JAVA_HOME to 7 in system properties then my eclipse system with 6 installed blows up when opening eclipse. If I leavemy system properties as java 6 then I can open both the old and new eclipse(even though the new one has java 7 installed in preferences).
Whats the difference? I asked around where I work and got a lot of blank stares.

Eclipse doesn't use JAVA_HOME, but NetBeans does, so JAVA_HOME is a convenient way to set part of the PATH and update it with one change only.
Yo can tell Eclipse to use a different JVM per project if you wish.
I just had the craziest dream. This tiny ad was in it.
