Building a Custom Report inside my web application

I want to provide a custom report for my web application which is based on J2EE.
I can use BIRT if we know what kind of reports.
But, if i have to allow the user to select what are the details he wants to see in the reports and what kind of reports he wants to see, please suggest me the technology and the approach i could follow to do it.
