Hi there,

I'd like to submit you a proposal for this amazing community... hoping that you'll find it interesting, of course. Here at Java ranch we discuss a lot of programming languages, algorithms, IDEs, and so on... would it be nice to have a "Tech Trend" report which may be periodically sent to
members to give them an hint about most discussed technologies ? Because I don't think it would be simple to automate a crawler able to classify posts, a specific forum in which members may talk about what they're studying, experimenting, trying may be create.

Sorry if I bothered you with this idea, and thank you again for your great work at the Java Ranch !

Claude,
I've been thinking about this a little. How would you identify this information? It seems like a lot of manual effort on first glance.

Hi Jeanne,

indeed, I think that developing such an automatic classifier would be neither simple, and probably will not be worth.
Probably the easiest way to gather this kind of information would be to allow users to add a "tag" to their profile where it's stated about which new technology (new, of course, compared with previous experience of the user) a member is working on. It is already possible to add to your own profile three icons
meaning "I like these products" ; something similar could be done to state "I'm gonna work on this technology".

To be honest, my proposal stems from an observation (I do not know how acceptable, but, of course, that's just my humble opinion).
It seems to me that most of the topic started on various forums concern practical problems (how can I do this or that ?), and there are relatively few posts which discuss architectural choices, the adoption of a framework rather than another, and so on; in a nutshell, "research" (or philosophy) and not just "development".

I think that a forum where you can discuss such arguments may be interesting and helpful when one wants to look for inspiration in what others have done, with an evaluation of the pros and cons based upon real experience.

Thank you again for your time and attention.

We actually do have a Design forum that no one uses

But I like the idea of tagging posts by the technology being discussed. I wonder how easy it is to do like a hashtag functionality to JForum. So, if I add #JForum in my post, the post gets tagged with JForum and the forum software changes the tag to a link that takes me to a page that lists other posts tagged with JForum. Of course, we don't want people to create jForum, JForum, Jforum and jforum, we will have to do something to merge tags together

Sorry, I was not aware of it
Maybe changing its name to "Design and architectures" may make it more attractive
