Is anyone using two factor for their apple id. I tried to set it up twice and abandoned it. Onm y first attempt, i had to change my password first and wait X days I never went back to it. Today i tried it again. I got as far as receiving the text. Then it said to turn on the find my iphone/ipad feature. I don't want that on. It had a vulnerability earlier in the year that felt worse than not having two factor.

This isn't a big deal as i don't store personal data in iCloud. I do use two factor for lots of other sites so was disppointed in how Apple did it.

Hi Jeanne,

I have two-step setup on Apple without the "Find My Phone" app. You can set it to use SMS messages: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5593
Here is where you add your SMS on the Apple ID site:

"Find My Phone" is definitely turned off on my phone and is signed out. I guess worse case, you could temporarily set it up with the Find app, add your SMS number, and then unlink/turn off the Find app.

I set up the SMS part. Then it took me right to the "find" page. I'm not comfortable having my phone be the only way to unlock. The other two factor sites I use give other options. (There's allegedly recovery codes for Apple, but I didn't see them.)

Hi Jeanne,

I don't know. Maybe your carrier doesn't provide the SMS support Apple wants (they have a list of supported carriers on the first link I gave you). Or, maybe the initial setup has been changed to force "Find My Phone" setup (which you could turn back off once setup, based on my experience). Regarding the Recover Key, it's on the first level "Password & Security" page (before I drilled down to the "Add or Remove Trusted Devices" page in my previous screenshot):

I would image if you don't have 2 Step turned on the option may not be there. It would seem kind of pointless to provide a Recovery Key to a system you are not using.
