Don't. That makes the reply look stupid. Please restore the edits and post an answer to Maneesh's question separately.

This reply is to Campbell Ritchie

what makes you to feel stupid? I edited my question so that it is understandable. Let me know if that is not understandable.

Moved to the Ranch Office as a more appropriate place to discuss this sort of thing.

The reason for not editing posts like that is that it now appears that Maneesh has answered a non‑existent question. It makes him look as if he had not read your post and not seen all the details he requested, which were not there when he posted but are there now.

This kind of explanation helps us more than just saying the reply is stupid. That was the worst reponse i ever got in Java Ranch.

Well, if you keep editing your posts (or calling responses that you get as "worse"), you probably won't need to worry about those responses being "worse" -- other ranchers will likely just stop responding to your questions.

I have long advocated that posts should not be editable at all as soon as there is a reply, the same way many other discussion sites operate. But as yet there is no consensus for this approach.

My concern is how would one know we should not be editing our responses. If the response is edited how do they know they wouldn't get any responses. Atleast I expect some kind of politeness when responding by not using words like STUPID. Do you agree?

Campbell wasn't being rude and neither did he call you stupid. His reply was:

Sravanthi Macharla wrote:Edited my question above. . . .

Don't. That makes the reply look stupid.

I don't see why you consider that impolite.

I think you misread Campbell's reply (emphasis mine)

He wrote wrote:That makes the reply look stupid.

With all fairness, I am the one who should feel offended as I was the one who replied and I can misunderstand him to say I am stupid.

To continue this discussion, even though the OP has already agreed to not edit posts after they have already been answered (or at least, I hope so) ... because we like to beat a dead horse...

To be counter fair, some people do get sensitive to certain words. This is more so in the case where they are not native English speakers, and may not be able to understand the subtleties (of the differences in context) to determine whether it is used in a derogatory fashion or not.

And "stupid", a word that is commonly used by children as an insult, may fall into such a category.
