I have never done Android development. I cannot tell from looking at what Amazon says about book how someone like me, without an Android phone to work with directly, does your book point to any way to test the code without having to update an actual Android phone? Thanks.
The Android SDK includes an emulator tool for testing apps. You really don't need an Android phone when initially working with Android. At some point, you might want to get an Android phone to see how your app performs on an actual device. I have an Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablet that I use.
Appendix C (included as a PDF file in the book's code file as a free download -- see http://www.apress.com/9781430264545) begins with a section on installing and configuring the SDK and other tools (including the emulator).
All the best.
