Hello Members,

I want to learn Java and would like some inputs from this community.

I am working on an ERP called JD Edwards and I have basic understanding of C. My aim to learn Java is to get hold on Web Services.

I am located in Bangalore currently and would like to know is it possible to learn Java on my own or is it wise to learn it through institute?

Regards,
Sumeet

That would depend on what you are comfortable with.

For self learning, I would suggest you get a good book*, a computer and practice practice practice .

*I personally would recommend Core Java series http://www.amazon.com/Core-Java-Volume-I-Fundamentals-Edition/dp/0132354764 Others might have different suggestions. Check out these forums for discussions on books http://www.coderanch.com/forums/c/8/

I am not at all convinced you can learn programming from a book. I think you would need somebody who knows what they are doing to help you.
I would also repeat what Bear said here.

I started on my own and I'm pretty well off with java. I would recommend getting a beginner java book and following youtube tutorials from TheCherno and TheNewBoston. But take care, its a little harder when you have no one to talk too about it. Just be prepared to post problems on forums and spend hours looking over you code as well as googling alot of stuff.

Not quite sure what the ERP has to do with it, particularly as nothing on the Wiki page mentions Java - although it does say that the software was purchased by Oracle.

So: What do you want to learn Java for? You mention "web services", but that's an enormous area, and Java certainly isn't the only player in it. I also agree completely with Bear's comment (linked by Campbell): Don't start out with the idea that you want to learn "web services", because the chances are it'll take you at least 3-6 months before you're competent enough with Java itself to even think about writing a web service class.

Learn the language because you're interested in it.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
