Hello Fellow Coders,

I am planning to give the exam for Oracle Java Certification and I need some help regarding the same.

Which is the 1st exam that one needs to give? Is it "Oracle Certified Associate" ? Or some other?

Also, which book is the best for preparing for the 1st certification exam (again, is it OCA or some other?)

I have the Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 by Kathy Sierra. But it is for Java 6. Do you recommend any other book for Java 7?

Thank You very much.

Hi Bhargav,

Welcome to the Ranch!

The Oracle Certified Associate Jave Programmer (OCAJP) is the first level exam taken by those who want to pursue certificates in Java. Right now, the standard is OCAJP7 (Java 7), but OCAJP8 (Java 8) is currently in a beta. The content is very different than the older 6 exam, as the 6 exam combined both the OCAJP and the sequel, OCPJP, into one exam. This thread provides a good distinction.

You will definitely want to look at the appropriate study material for the exam you choose. Most recent OCAJP7 graduates have used at least the following study material:
Mala Gupta's OCA Java SE 7 Programmer I Certification Guide
Enthuware Exam Tests

There is also the Associate Certification (OCAJP 7/8) forum dedicated to discussions like this, so you'll want to check there as there are additional discussions on study materials and personal experiences from recent exam writers. Now, the OCAJP8 exam is still in beta, so there is no dedicated study materials that I know of, but this thread and this one highlight the new material covered and provides some feedback on if waiting for the OCAJP8 formal exam versus writing the OCAJP7 makes sense.

Thank You very much for your prompt reply.

The Kathy Sierra - Bates book for 'OCA Java SE 7 Programmer I Certification' isn't available yet, am I right?

Is Mala Gupta's book good for a start? Are the topics explained well? Or is there any other better book?

How is the "oca java se 7 programmer i study guide (exam 1z0-803)" by liguori robert

Sorry, you'll need to more clearly define "start". If you mean start studying for the exam, than yes - it's an excellent book. If you mean start learning Java, no. Mala's book is for those who already understand the core fundamentals of the language and are looking to prepare for the exam.

I never used the book by Robert Liguori, so I cannot comment on that. However, try using the Search function at the top of the page for "liguori" and you will find many comments from those who are more familiar with the book. Also, please review the forum I outlined dedicated to this exam topic.

Regarding K&B's book, I believe it will be out next month according to Amazon.

Cheers!
Chris
