Hey there!

I took the test today and I passed with 86%! Yay for me!

I prepared with Mala Gupta's OCA Java SE 7 Programmer I Certification Guide and I bought the Enthuware mock exams to test and improve my Java knowledge. I was very pleased with Mala's book and I think it's an excellent starting point to begin with. The book comes with a free mock exam + it has 10 questions at the end of each chapter to give you an idea how well you understood the subject matter. But even though the book is a good read and the extra mock exam helps with preparing you shouldn't rely on just this book alone. The book covers a lot of the subject material but not all of it or maybe you might have misunderstood something. You could read another OCA book or you could choose to do more mock exams. I chose for the latter because I like the idea of learning from my mistakes, so that's why I bought the Enthuware mock exams to prepare myself even more. And boy, it was worth the money. Here are the results:

First test: 61 (failed)
Second test: 66
Third test: 77
Fourth test: 81
Fifth test: 78
Sixth test: 74
Most-missed: 77

As you can see, even after reading Mala's book I failed the test the first time. Well I must add here that I took a 3-4 week break (vacation) between reading the book and taking the first mock exam so the lower score might be because I needed to freshen up everything a little bit. Anyway, each time I took a test I reviewed every question on that test. Even the one's that I answered right! I did this because sometimes I answered questions correctly but because of a wrong reason. This could give you the false idea that you master a certain concept while you actually don't. By doing this for every test I improved my general knowledge a lot. The sixth and most-missed test were taken on the day before my real test and I must admit I was getting a little bit fed up with taking tests over and over again and spending all my free-time for this test. But the hard work payed off, I passed with 86% while I only needed 63%.

My conclusion and recommendation is to read a good OCA book to get a good understanding of everything and then start filling in mock exams to review yourself so you can strengthen your weaker points. While taking these mock exams I strongly encourage you to review all the questions to make sure you're learning and improving instead of taking just another test and hope for the best. And of course, use this forum to ask for help if you need any. Don't be shy, I asked for help too a few days ago! Good luck!

Congratulations, champion! Great score!

Thanks for sharing your experience and your mock exam scores. Both will be very valuable for other ranchers who are preparing for the OCAJP7 exam. Have a cow!
